Igniting Future Students
Throughout my academic journey, I was fortunate to meet many wonderful individuals and learn from them. As I advanced in my studies and broadened my knowledge, I found immense joy in sharing. I’m thrilled to have been chosen to represent the field of Computer Science in this interview. I’m passionate about what I do and eager to show people that computer science is one of the most creative and enjoyable crafts.
InterviewTeaching iOS Development
Diving into the ‚Mobile-Lab‘ course at the University of Hamburg was a game-changer for me, where I improved my app development skills and learned to present my creations to a large audience. Having excelled in the course, I was selected as the new tutor. Since then, I eagerly anticipate teaching iOS development to new students every year. Seeing the innovative apps they create with the tools and concepts I provide is incredibly exciting.
Additionally, I’ve had the privilege of introducing high school students to the exciting world of university-level projects during multiple “trial study” sessions, showcasing the practical and innovative side of computer science education.
Building Apps for a Sustainable World
As an app developer, the potential to make a difference is one of the most beautiful reasons for me. I contributed to the EU-funded “GoJelly” project, a €6 million initiative, by developing the Jelly Spotter app. This project uses jellyfish for their potential in science, particularly in filtering microplastics from the ocean.
Tracking jellyfish locations is challenging. The app I developed is utilized by lifeguards to report jellyfish sightings, enhancing scientists‘ ability to monitor these creatures for their research.
Accessibility Research: Revolutionizing Language Learning
As part of my studies, I teamed up with three fellow students on a project aimed at changing the way we learn languages. We built an iPad app that combines machine learning and eye-tracking, making language learning intuitive and accessible, especially for those with physical disabilities.
The app tracks your eye movements to tailor your reading experience, showing you texts and relevant images. This approach, known as multimodal learning, got us recognized and funded by the University of Hamburg’s excellence funding.
Publishing Research
After developing our app, we wrote a paper and got it published at KONVENS 2023. Going to the NLP conference was a great chance to learn more about current research and talk with other academics.
Our work was well-received, which also led to us being invited to discuss our work at the CML Summer School. It was an awesome platform to highlight how our project could make learning languages more accessible.
